IVEA welcomes Department of Education Plan for Integration of Education Services
19 May 2009
Statement by General Secretary, Michael Moriarty: Today’s announcement by Minister Haughey that from September 2009, a single coordinated School Support Programme involving the Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL), the School Completion Programme (SCP) and the Visiting Teachers Service for Travellers (VTST) will be integrated under the National Education Welfare Board (NEWB) is a very welcome announcement indeed.
For too long, support services to students have been too fragmented. Hopefully this development signals the beginning of a process that will ensure that all students have all their special needs met in an integrated manner.”
IVEA has had a Task Group looking at the totality of the Student Support Services and, while its work is very much on-going, it is obvious from the work that has been undertaken to date, that schools, their students, and their students’ parents, are crying out for a “one-stop-shop” approach to meeting the special needs of students – irrespective of whether these needs are behavioural, emotional, or learning.
IVEA looks forward to working with the Department of Education and Science and the NEWB to construct a fully integrated Student Support Service that addresses the real needs of students, parents and schools.
