IVEA Welcomes Proposed New Community National Schools
21 September 2009
Speaking on behalf of the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA), the General Secretary Michael Moriarty today welcomed the Minister for Education’s commitment to establish further community national schools (CNS) in 2010 under the patronage of Vocational Education Committees (VECs).
“The Minister’s announcement at the recent IVEA Congress that he wants to extend the pilot to a number of new locations in 2010 is best seen as an indication of the Minister’s commitment to enhance the role of VECs,” said Mr Moriarty.
“As a former primary school principal, I am convinced by experience that the local VEC can contribute very significant supports to local primary schools. The continued expansion of the CNS model into different local environmental settings is absolutely essential to ensure that the model prospers,” continued Mr. Moriarty.
“Above all, the community national school model must be seen and acknowledged as answering the diverse needs of local communities who are to be the ultimate customers of the service,” he stated.
Note: Minister O’Keeffe addressed the IVEA Annual Congress in Clare on 17th September and announced his decision to expand the current pilot community national school model (Scoil Ghráinne and Scoil Choilm under the patronage of Co Dublin VEC) to other and different locations.
