Student Grants Payments
05 November 2009
A statement by Michael Moriarty: Any delays in the processing of student grants are being caused by matters outside of the control of the VEC. The current moratorium on recruitment and replacement of staff is having a catastrophic effect on VECs. In addition, the fact that the scheme was issued later than anticipated has meant that more work had to be done by less staff in a shorter period of time.
There has also been a significant increase in grant applications but in a period when VEC staffing is being reduced because of the public sector embargo.
There have been extensive negotiations with the Department of Education and Science on the development of the new single unified grants scheme which will be implemented under the new Student Support Act. In the meantime, VEC staffs have been doing trojan work in very difficult conditions, with less staffing resources, while addressing a significant increase in grant applications.
I look forward to the development of the proposed modernised system of grants payments which I hope will be implemented as soon as possible.
