IVEA Welcomes Minister's Statement Today re Schools Reopening
11 January 2010
Statement by Michael Moriarty, General Secretary of the Irish Vocational Education Association
On behalf of IVEA's member VECs, I welcome the Minister's statement today that boards of management locally can re-assume their authority to make a decision on whether or not it is feasible to reopen their schools in the context of the current inclement weather.
I commend the Minister for taking a lead in this matter on health and safety grounds last week, but it is also prudent for local management to re-assume their statutory responsibilities in regard to the management of their schools.
As weather conditions vary greatly across the country, it should be a matter for local management to decide whether or not it is appropriate for their schools to reopen tomorrow, Wednesday or Thursday. A universal decision is no longer relevant.
IVEA is confident that VECs and their boards of management will make the most appropriate decision in the best interests of their pupils and staff.
