Statement on School Closures
07 January 2010
Having surveyed a number of VECs and depending on local weather conditions, IVEA confirms that the number of school closures will be between 50 and 100% in each of our county VECs.
The local conditions in each county is a chief determining factor giving rise to the extent of schools closures amongst the vocational sector's 250 second level schools. Similarly VECs also operate approximately 300 centres of education and these have also been severely affected by the inclement weather conditions.
IVEA General Secretary Michael Moriarty states "Decisions on school closure are made primarily in the interests of Health and Safety of both pupils and staff. Some schools did open this morning but because of lack of school transport they were unable to continue. School transport authorities and VECs are keeping the situation under constant review. The schools will keep parents and staff updated through every available means.
This matter will be reviewed again over the weekend."
