IVEA expresses concern at new teacher union directive on Posts of Responsibility
22 February 2010
Statement by Michael Moriarty, General Secretary of The Irish Vocational Education Association
IVEA notes with concern the most recent directive (19 February 2010) issued by the teacher unions concerning Posts of Responsibility in Second Level Schools.
The union directive is absolutely specific and clear that any duties of a vacated post can no longer be carried out by another teacher and also the reorganisation of POR duties is also to be suspended.
IVEA General Secretary states "This directive will have serious implications for particular schools which are already badly affected by the moratorium where post holders have retired or resigned from service. As a consequence, Principals or Deputy Principals have been trying to shoulder the burden of additional functions and duties. With the expected increased number of retiring post holders over the summer period it could well mean that the administration of some badly affected schools will collapse.
Many of these special duty and assistant principal posts in schools support students and their parents. It is regrettable that many management duties are to remain unfulfilled because of this trade union directive. There is a need for government to assess the impact of the moratorium before the end of this school year and before we reach a point where some schools will be unable to function. In such a scenario it is the pupils and their parents who will be most affected".
