IVEA Welcomes New Minister for Education
23 March 2010
Statement by Michael Moriarty, General Secretary
I am very happy to welcome the Tánaiste, Mary Coughlan TD, as the new Minister for Education and Skills. I look forward to working closely with her in the coming months.
IVEA will be seeking an early meeting with the Tánaiste to put IVEA’s very clear policy on the future role of VECs to her. We will also be imparting to her the devastating impact the moratorium blocking appointments to vacant posts of responsibility has had in second level schools.
The Minister faces particular challenges in this new role, but she will be able to bring to bear her background of service on the boards of management of Abbey Vocational School and the Tourism College in Killybegs, as well as her membership of Donegal Vocational Education Committee, on which she also served as chairperson.
On behalf of IVEA, I wish her the very best as she comes to grips with her new role and responsibilities.
