Some Vacant School Posts Of Responsibility May Now Be Filled - Minister's Initiative Welcomed By IVEA
05 July 2010
The Tánaiste and Minister for Education's announcement today that provision has been made for a limited derogation from the devastating government-imposed moratorium to allow a limited number of vacant Assistant Principal posts of responsibility to be filled across primary and second level schools, has been welcomed by the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA).
"The moratorium has prevented appointments to vacant Assistant Principal posts of responsibility in schools over the past two years. Assistant Principal posts support the senior management functions of schools and are crucial for their efficient operation. The effect of the moratorium has been to completely undermine the administrative capabilities of some schools which have been particularly affected by retirements," stated IVEA General Secretary Michael Moriarty.
"The Minister's announcement is a step in the right direction, but it is only that - a step," continued Mr Moriarty. "This 'storm' has been raging for some time, and this limited alleviation has to be welcomed. It will have to focus on the worst affected schools. But it should be only the first step in a process which addresses the emergency that currently prevails in the school administration process afflicted by the lack of senior personnel with administrative responsibilities."
"IVEA will continue to campaign for additional reliefs, notwithstanding its welcome for this current development," he concluded.
