IVEA Welcomes Publication Of 2010 Education (Amendment) Bill
28 September 2010
The Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA) welcomed today the publication of the Education (Amendment) Bill 2010, which provides the formal legislative framework to allow Vocational Education Committees (VECs) to become involved in the provision of primary education.
"VECs have already been involved in the patronage of Community National Schools for some time. The Community National School model provides for flexibility and diversity under one roof, in a multi-belief primary school that operates through an ethos of inclusivity and respect for all beliefs," said Michael Moriarty, IVEA General Secretary.
"When the new bill is enacted, it will provide the flexibility for VECs to become patrons or joint patrons of existing national schools, in addition to new primary schools," he continued. "IVEA is very interested in working with other partners to develop the co-patronage concept."
"As statutory local education authorities, VECs are in a position to offer a range of supports to schools under their patronage, including human resource management, building maintenance, procurement, and much more. This could be of immense value to existing national schools, whose resources are currently stretched to their limit."
"We look forward to the progress of the bill through the Oireachtas," Mr Moriarty concluded.
