PLC Registration Fee
25 November 2010
Statement by Michael Moriarty, General Secretary of the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA)
The Government announced today (24th November 2010) the introduction of a PLC registration fee of €200 from next year as part of the National Recovery Plan 2011 - 2014.
IVEA General Secretary Michael Moriarty states:
IVEA had sought that no registration fee would apply to PLC students on the grounds that many students who access PLC programmes come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. IVEA is most disappointed with the announcement that a €200 fee will now apply and this will be the thin edge of the wedge as G overnment is free to increase this fee in future years. We should avoid disincentivising or preventing people accessing routes back to employment. PLC programmes are programmes designed to re-skill and up-skill many who have lost their jobs. While one arm of government promotes incentivisation schemes to get people back to work, another arm of government is imposing financial fees on education and training. Accordingly, this fee is ill conceived and it will likely increase in future years it will certainly disincentivise many who seek to improve their education and training qualifications
