A statement by Michael Moriarty: Any delays in the processing of student grants are being caused by matters outside of the control of the VEC. The current moratorium on recruitment and replacement of staff is having a catastrophic effect on VECs. In addition, the fact that the scheme was issued later than anticipated has meant that more work had to be done by less staff in a shorter period of time.

IVEA has expressed dismay over the recommendation in the Report of An Bord Snip Nua to reduce the capitation grant for schools. IVEA General Secretary Michael Moriarty said, “A reduction in capitation grants could well be catastrophic for schools. During the past year, the education sector has been hit by budget cuts several times over, and schools have suffered considerably already. Any further significant cuts could seriously affect the capacity of schools to survive.”

In light of the current economic crisis coupled with media reports highlighting the lack of funding for out-of-hours social services, the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA) has called on the Government to establish a task force to oversee the implementation of ‘Reach Out: National Strategy for Action on Suicide Prevention’. The IVEA is also calling on the Government to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure out-of-hours social worker and mental health services are rolled out as a matter of urgency.

Commenting on the call by Fine Gael's Education spokesman, Brian Hayes, for a lifting of the 'cap' on Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) course enrolments, IVEA General Secretary, Michael Moriarty, said "it is absolutely essential that the 'cap', which currently limits PLC enrolments to 30,000, is lifted significantly - otherwise many school leavers will be left with no possibility for further enhancing their skills and qualifications and, indeed, little hope for the future."
