Senior Traveller Training Centres (STTCs)
Established to provide basic education for travellers between 15 and 25, STTCs have become training centres for older travellers - mainly female, though more males are becoming involved. The programme targets those who left school with little or no education and young parents, given the impact they can have on their children's subsequent participation in schooling and society; and increasingly travellers are returning to education in STTCs.
The centres offer a holistic and expanding range of flexible programmes that respond to the needs, talents and interests of participants over a two-year period - Junior and Leaving Certificate programmes/subjects and a range of vocational options (accredited by FETAC) and work experience. Literacy, numeracy, communications and ICT skills are integrated into all educational experiences.
Participants receive the jobseekers allowance and their travel subsistence and accommodation costs are covered by the State. Please contact your local VEC for further information.
