What VECs Do
Management of Second level Schools and Colleges
VECs have responsibility for the management of 247 second-level schools and colleges - catering to some 98,000 students and employing some 9000 teachers and 700 special needs assistants.
Student Support Grants in Further and Higher Education
Currently VECs administer some 55% of all student support grant schemes for both Further and Higher education.
Once the Student Support Bill is enacted, VECs will have sole responsibility for the administration of a new unified support scheme which will deliver very significant efficiencies in the way the student support service operates.
School Transport Scheme
The school transport scheme for both primary and post-primary education is administered through the VECs and VEC CEOs act as the Transport Liaison Officers for the scheme.
Currently the scheme carries about 135,000 students each school day - 75,000 in the post-primary sector, 60,000 in the primary sector and some 8,000 students with special needs.
This work requires close liaison between the transport liaison officer and virtually every school in Ireland - 3,160 (primary) and 732 (post primary).
