Youth Work

The Youth Work Act of 2001 resulted in VECs being given a number of functions and responsibilities for youth work programmes and services within their scheme areas.

Providing assistance, including financial assistance to youth work organisations.
Preparing and implementing Youth Work Development Plans (2003-2007).
Drafting annual youth work budgets.
Reporting on youth work services to the Minister.
Establishing a Youth Work Committee to advise and make recommendations to the VEC on the performance of its youth work functions.
Establishing Local Voluntary Youth Councils.

VECs have appointed Youth Officers to assist them in meeting their new responsibilities and these officers work closely with the other services provided by their VECs and with national and local youth organisations to ensure that the wider development needs of young people (particularly disadvantaged young people) in their areas are addressed in an integrated manner.
